EXAMINING IDIOMATIC ABILITIES IN THE SPEAKING SKILLS OF CLASS XI STUDENTS AT SMAN 2 SORONG CITY IN THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION 4.0

This study was conducted to determine the speaking skills of class XI 4 A students of SMAN 2 Sorong which influence the use of idiomatic expressions and the use of idioms in West Papua. This study was conducted using a quantitative correlation research method. The data from this study were collected using a questionnaire test method conducted at SMAN 2 Sorong City in 2023/2024 academic year. The subjects of this thesis were class XI 4 A students of SMAN 2 Sorong City. The results of this study indicate that students have significant speaking skills with idiomatic use with a very strong correlation based on statistical analysis conducted during the research. Statistical significance is essential for determining meaningful findings in scientific research, and in this study, the correlation between speaking skills and the ability to use idiomatic expressions was found to be significant the analysis showed a significant correlation with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.687, indicating a strong correlation between speaking skills and the use of idiomatic expressions. In line with this research, it turns out that the use of idiomatics in Southwest Papua is less used due to 3 factors, namely rarely used, those who use them are usually those who are used to playing on social media, and their surroundings make them understand English, especially idioms.
